What Is Gold-Filled Wire?
Pure gold is 24Kt. and is so soft that is it impossible to utilize it in wire wrap jewelry. 14/20 wire or 1/20 Rolled gold
wire is created by taking a sheet of 14 kt. Gold and bonding it through extreme heat and pressure to a core of
semi-precious metal (brass). This is a very sophisticated process and only a few mills in the world do it. You should
not mistake this process for GOLD PLATING. There is a very big difference. The end result is a 14kt. tube which is
strong, durable, and resistant to tarnish because of its 14 kt. gold covering. There are collections of old gold-filled
wire jewelry pieces with dates on them from the early 1900's that are still in excellent shape! They used this metal
much more in the 30's and 40's to make watch bands, cameo settings, well, it was used to make just about
everything. Today there are very few jewelry items made with this metal commercially. Usually they are done in a
very inferior gold plate to keep the costs down.
The finished product thus has a surface layer of gold of the appropriate karat weight which is very thick compared to
gold plate, gold electroplate or rolled gold plate. The quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total
product. This is commonly marked as 14/20, 12/20 or 10/20, which mean receptively 1/20th by weight 14Kt.
gold-filled, 12Kt. gold-filled, etc.
* There is 100 times more gold in 14 kt. Gold filled (rolled gold) than in gold plate. * A 14/20 Gold Filled piece is
usually considered a lifetime piece of jewelry.
Beware of the difference! A 14Kt. Gold filled material carries over a 10% cost increase over 12Kt. material. Most wire
wrappers use 14Kt. gold filled wire. Liberty Wire Artworks offers you only the finest 14kt gold filled wire for all of your
wire jewelry making needs. Your reputation and the satisfaction of your customers demands only the best in gold

What is Anti -Tarnish sterling Silver Wire?
Argentium® Sterling Silver is a revolutionary new alloy which has improved tarnish resistance, fire scale resistance
and ductility over regular sterling. Argentium Silver is also laser weldable and fuses easily to gold and silver base
alloys without the formation of fire scale. In this paper, the properties and applications of Argentium Silver will be
elaborated. Chemical and physical properties, phase diagrams, key reactions and notable phase transitions will be
discussed. The positive global impact of Argentium Silver on energy consumption and the environment will also be
touched upon. Insight will be given on new, non-jewelry related applications for the alloy, in fields such as musical
instruments and tarnish resistant coatings.
Introduction:
The key ingredient in Argentium Silver is germanium. Germanium was discovered by Clemens Winkler in 1886 who
named it after his homeland Germania (Latin for German). Germanium had no practical use until WWII, when it was
used in England to make transistors for radars. Germanium comes from the minerals argyrodite and germanite; zinc
ores; and coal. In its pure state, germanium is brittle and shatters like glass. Germanium is a gray-white metalloid
with properties similar to silicon. Argentium Silver was invented by Peter Johns, a professor and silversmith at
Middlesex University. Metaleurop S.A. approached Middlesex University’s Jewellery and Silversmithing Design
department in 1989 to take part in a research program to find uses of germanium in the jewelry industry. A series of
binary (silver/germanium) and ternary (silver/germanium/copper) alloys were tested. It was found that at least 1%
germanium is required to prevent fire scale. The presence of copper forms copper germanides in the 2nd phase,
which enables the alloy to be reversibly hardened using simple heat treatments.
The key benefit of Argentium Silver  wire jewelry making wire is as follows:
Δ High tarnish resistance
Alloy patents for Argentium Silver are filed both in the U.S. and internationally (PCT and other). Argentium Silver has
four issued patents and 16 patents pending. The patents cover a range of topics, such as alloys, additives, solders.
Liberty Wire Artworks carries a full compliment of anti-tarnish argentium wire in various sizes and gauges for all of
your wire jewelry making needs.
What is Rose Gold Wire?
Rose gold, also known as pink gold or red gold, is a mixture of pure yellow gold with a high percentage of copper.
Rose gold is created by increasing the copper-colored alloys mixed with the gold and decreasing the silver-colored
alloys. 14K rose gold contains as much pure gold as 14K yellow gold but, because of the increased copper, is
slightly pinker or redder in color
.
What is Sterling Silver Wire?
to as solid silver, Sterling Silver is actually composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy, usually copper. This
proportion never varies -- it is fixed by law. Because pure silver alone is too soft for wearing as wire jewelry, the
alloy or copper gives Sterling Silver wire jewelry its added stiffness and wearing qualities. You can make beautiful
wire jewelry using silver wire and your customers will love your wire jewelry and you too.
Liberty Wire Artworks has sterling silver wire for all of your wire jewelry making needs. All of Ricky's wire jewelry
making projects can be made with sterling silver wire
